The boots used in the figure skating is generally made by hand from many layers ofleather. During 20th century the design of the boots changed , old photographs of famous skaters like Sonia Heine from the 1920s and 1930s shows wearing thin, agile boots reaching to mid-calf. The modern skating boots are totally rigid that supports the foot and ankle during any critical jump or limps. They are cut much lower, just over the ankle, to help the foot to move flexibly. Thus, many skaters actually have their boots customized to ensure a good fit so that they can perform well especially during any special jumps. If you want to learn it then you should buy skates.

The blades used in the figure skates actually differs a lot from those used in hockey skates. The figure skates have a large set of toe picks or jagged teeth on the front of the blade. These are generally important for jumping , footwork's and should not be used for spins or stroking. The Toe picks designs have become really popular and also includes additional picks on the sides of the blade known as K-Pick.

The skates are basically made up of tempered carbon steel and are coated with high-quality chrome with lightweight aluminium, stainless steel blades of about 3/16 inch (4mm thicker) and also includes slightly tapered cross-section. The blades or the skates are generally designed depending upon the age, size and skill level of the skaters. The blades used for advanced skaters generally have larger toe picks and different curves, simply different from those of beginners or intermediates. When you actually see the blades from sides, you will notice that the blades are not flat but slightly curved, forming an arc of a circle with radius 180-220 cm and is known as THE ROCKER OF THE BLADE. The sweet spot is below the ball of the foot, and this is usually located near the stanchion of the blade.
